What to Expect During Therapy

 During a Session

Individual therapy sessions will last approximately 45 to 50 minutes. I will provide a warm, non-judgmental, supportive environment, helping you feel safe and comfortable. Together we will examine your feelings, thoughts, and actions. You will practice and explore alternative thoughts and actions that relieve distress. The sessions will focus on identifying your strengths and enhancing your natural problem-solving abilities. Identifying goals and developing manageable, measurable objectives is another part of the work. The goal will be to help you feel good about yourself, strengthen interpersonal relationships, be more successful, satisfied, and effective.

Therapy Duration

Therapy and counseling can be an open-ended process or a precise solution-focused intervention. We will continually take a moment, re-evaluate progress towards your goals, discuss the process, and identify your needs.

 Confidentiality

Illinois law and the National Association of Social Workers require Social Workers to protect their clients' privacy and safety.

The Social Worker is mandated to report to the appropriate authorities in the following circumstances:

  • client discloses evidence of a plan to suicide

  • client discloses an intent to injure, kill or cause serious bodily harm to another person

  • client engages in the abuse of children, elders, or persons with disabilities

Fulfilling this responsibility protects you and the most vulnerable members of our community. It is my practice to make every effort to inform you if I initiate such a report.

 Medications

Some patients take prescription medications to help with their mood. Primary Care Providers and Psychiatrists can prescribe medications. Psychiatrists are physicians who are specialists in the treatment of mental health care. Primary Care Providers, also known as your "family doctor" or internal medicine physicians, manage various medical health concerns for adults. Mid-level providers, Nurse Practitioners or Physician Assistants, may provide primary care or manage psychiatric medications. Prescription medications are not for everyone. We will work together to determine your needs, and sometimes we work collaboratively with the prescribing physician to provide comprehensive care. A written Release of Information must be completed to authorize open communication with any outside provider. The use of prescription medications is a profoundly personal decision.
